Neighborhood History
Neighborhood History
Albany Park is a Northwest Side Chicago neighborhood that grew rapidly following the extension of the Ravenswood elevated rail line in the 1890s, its streets filling in with the housing and commerce of a city in full expansion. Named for Albany, New York, the neighborhood became one of Chicago's defining immigrant gateway communities — a place where successive waves of newcomers arrived, established themselves, and shaped the character of the blocks around them.
Today Albany Park is one of Chicago's most genuinely diverse neighborhoods, its identity layered by Korean, Middle Eastern, Mexican, South Asian, and Eastern European communities whose restaurants, bakeries, and independently owned businesses line Lawrence Avenue — one of the city's great multicultural commercial corridors. The Kimball Brown Line station anchors the neighborhood's connection to the wider city, and the North Branch River Trail offers a green corridor through the urban fabric.
That layered, living diversity — the sense of a neighborhood continuously made and remade by the people who choose it — is the spirit behind the MY-NHD Albany Park collection, made for everyone who knows what Lawrence Avenue means.
