Allendale is an East Oakland neighborhood developed circa 1909 as Oakland's residential grid expanded eastward along the Foothill Boulevard and Seminary Avenue corridors, its bungalow-style homes built for the working and middle-class families who formed the backbone of early 20th-century East Oakland. The neighborhood takes its name from an early East Oakland landowner or developer — a naming convention consistent with the residential subdivision practices of the period — and grew into a quiet, tree-lined residential community anchored by its schools and public institutions.
