Neighborhood History

Andersonville traces its name to an early Scandinavian settler named Anderson, or Andersen, whose presence gave the area its identity when Swedish immigrants began settling here in the 1850s. Growth accelerated after the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, when city ordinances banning new wooden construction pushed Swedish families north of the city limits to this affordable stretch along Clark Street, building the enclave that would become, by 1900, one of the largest concentrations of Swedish residents outside Stockholm.

Ebenezer Lutheran Church, built by the community in 1892, and the Swedish American Museum, founded in 1976 and marked by its landmark water tower painted with the Swedish flag, still anchor the neighborhood's Scandinavian identity along Clark Street's historic commercial corridor.

From a Swedish farming settlement to one of Chicago's most distinct commercial main streets, Andersonville's roots run deep — MY-NHD's collection lets you carry that immigrant-built legacy with you.
