Neighborhood History
Anza Vista takes its name from Juan Bautista de Anza, the Spanish military commander who led a colonizing expedition of approximately 240 men, women, and children from Sonora, Mexico, to San Francisco Bay in 1775–76 — selecting the sites for the Presidio of San Francisco and Mission San Francisco de Asís that would anchor the city's founding. The neighborhood occupies a hillside in San Francisco's Western Addition, bounded by Geary Boulevard, Turk Street, Masonic Avenue, and Divisadero Street.
The land beneath Anza Vista carries a layered past. From circa 1860, it served as the Roman Catholic Calvary Cemetery, one of four major burial grounds established around Lone Mountain during San Francisco's early expansion. The final burial was recorded in 1916. Following a citywide mandate, the Archdiocese of San Francisco exhumed and relocated the remaining interments to Holy Cross Cemetery in Colma between 1938 and the late 1940s. Streets for the new Anza Vista neighborhood were graded circa 1950, and a Sears department store — now the City Center retail complex anchored by Target — opened at Geary Boulevard and Masonic Avenue in 1951, marking the neighborhood's post-war rebirth on ground with two centuries of history beneath it.
That layered history — Spanish colonial ambition, Catholic stewardship, and mid-century reinvention — is exactly what MY-NHD apparel is built to carry. Wearing Anza Vista means wearing a neighborhood that began as a name on a Spanish expeditionary map and became a streetcar-era hillside community on the far edge of a growing city.
