Archer Heights takes its name from William B. Archer, an Illinois and Michigan Canal commissioner and land speculator who first acquired property along the road that bears his name in 1835 — a route that itself traces a former Native American trail southwest from downtown Chicago. Swampy prairie land held little early settlement, but the arrival of streetcars and railroads in the early twentieth century drew waves of Polish, Italian, Czech, and Russian Jewish immigrant laborers who built the neighborhood's parishes and bungalows.

Twin Catholic parishes, St. Bruno's, founded in 1925, and St. Richard's, established in 1938, anchored generations of that immigrant community, while the Pulaski Orange Line station, opened in 1993, connected the neighborhood to the Loop for the first time.

Archer Heights was built by generations of newcomers who made a swampy prairie their own — MY-NHD's collection carries that same immigrant, working-class pride forward.
