Armour Square takes its name from Philip Danforth Armour, the Chicago meatpacking magnate and philanthropist honored when the South Park Commission dedicated the neighborhood's namesake park in 1905. German, Irish, and Swedish immigrants had already settled the area after the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, when new brick building codes pushed those unable to afford stone or brick construction into this working-class enclave just south of downtown.

Armour Square Park, a Beaux Arts landscape designed by Daniel H. Burnham and the Olmsted Brothers, remains the neighborhood's civic anchor, standing across the street from Guaranteed Rate Field, longtime home of the Chicago White Sox, while Wentworth Gardens has housed generations of South Side families.
