Neighborhood History

Ashburn's name has an unglamorous origin: the area served as Chicago's dumping ground for ashes from coal-fired furnaces before the neighborhood was formally named around 1908. Growth came slowly after the area's 1893 Clarkdale subdivision was platted near 83rd and Central Park Avenue along the new Chicago and Grand Trunk Railway, with early Dutch, Swedish, and Irish settlers building fewer than twenty homes in the neighborhood's first decades.

Ashburn Flying Field, Chicago's first registered airport, opened in the marshy grasslands here in 1916 and reportedly hosted a young Charles Lindbergh honing his flying skills before his historic transatlantic crossing. Today, Scottsdale Park and William J. Bogan High School anchor a neighborhood built up rapidly by postwar veterans and their families.
