Ashbury Heights takes its name from Munroe Ashbury, a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors from 1864 to 1870, who played a direct role in planning the streets and layout of this part of the city. The neighborhood sits on the hill immediately south of Haight-Ashbury, rising toward Tank Hill, and shares the Ashbury Street corridor that bears its namesake's mark on San Francisco's civic map.

Development of Ashbury Heights followed the completion of the Haight Street Cable Railroad in 1883, which opened the western slopes of the city to residential expansion. Victorian and Edwardian homes built during the late 19th and early 20th centuries line the neighborhood's winding hillside streets — many of them surviving the catastrophic 1906 earthquake and fire that leveled much of San Francisco to the east. Buena Vista Park, established in 1867 as Hill Park and the oldest official park in San Francisco, anchors the northern edge of the neighborhood and remains its most enduring civic landmark.
