Auburn Gresham's roots reach back to small German and Dutch farming settlements of the early nineteenth century, later joined by Irish railroad workers drawn by the city's expanding services. The neighborhood's defining boom came after the World's Columbian Exposition of 1893 extended public transportation to the South Side, and the population nearly tripled between 1920 and 1930, from 19,558 to 57,381, as police officers, firefighters, and stockyard workers built the brick bungalows that still line its streets.

The Auburn Gresham Bungalow Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places and encompassing 264 brick bungalows built between 1918 and 1932, remains the neighborhood's architectural signature, alongside Auburn Park's five-acre lagoon, land once owned by Chicago's first mayor, William B. Ogden, and St. Sabina Catholic Church, established in 1916.
