Neighborhood History

Avalon Park's name carries an unexpected literary echo: after early German and Irish railroad workers built homes on stilts to escape the marshy ground once nicknamed Pennytown, the Avalon Park Community Church led a successful 1910 campaign to rename the community after the legendary English Isle of Avalon, resting place of King Arthur. A citywide sewer project in 1900 had already begun draining the swampland, opening the way for the bungalow construction boom that followed.

The neighborhood's namesake park, a 28-acre landscape inspired by the Olmsted Brothers' designs and completed with a brick fieldhouse in 1958, anchors a community whose bungalow-lined streets earned recognition as the Avalon Park Bungalow Historic District. Chicago Vocational Career Academy, opened in 1940 and once home to a Navy aircraft-mechanic training program during World War II, remains a neighborhood landmark.

From a drained marshland renamed for a legend to a National Register bungalow district, Avalon Park's layered history is woven into every MY-NHD design carrying its name.
