Avondale takes its name from an early subdivision established during the nineteenth century, likely inspired by the Scottish place name Avon Dale, meaning valley of the River Avon. The neighborhood developed rapidly between the 1870s and early twentieth century as industry expanded along rail corridors on Chicago's Northwest Side. Rail transportation and manufacturing employment served as the principal development forces.

Permanent landmarks include St. Hyacinth Basilica and the historic commercial corridors along Milwaukee Avenue. These enduring structures reflect the neighborhood's association with successive immigrant communities, particularly Polish residents who shaped much of Avondale's twentieth-century identity.
