Balboa Hollow takes its name from Balboa Street, which was named for Vasco Núñez de Balboa, the Spanish conquistador who in September 1513 became the first European to sight the Pacific Ocean after crossing the Isthmus of Panama. Balboa Street is part of an alphabetical sequence of avenues in San Francisco's Richmond District named for Spanish explorers — Anza, Balboa, Cabrillo — reflecting the city's deliberate acknowledgment of its Pacific-facing Spanish colonial origins. The neighborhood centers on the Inner Balboa Street Neighborhood Commercial District, a city-recognized commercial corridor, and sits east of Park Presidio Boulevard at the northeastern edge of Golden Gate Park.
