Neighborhood History
Neighborhood History
Bathurst Manor is a North York neighbourhood on a plateau bounded by Finch Avenue West to the north, Sheppard Avenue West to the south, Dufferin Street to the west and the West Don River to the east. It was built on farmland between 1954 and the early 1960s, and by 1956 development was well underway. Between 1956 and 1961 its population grew from 1,953 to 9,271, as young families and Holocaust survivors made it a largely Jewish suburb.
Its schools opened with the neighbourhood: Wilmington Public School in 1954, Cedar Grove in 1958 and Charles H. Best Junior Middle School in 1960, and the Community Hebrew Academy of Toronto moved into the Wilmington building in 1979. The Northern YMHA, now the Prosserman Jewish Community Centre, opened in 1961 and counted more than 8,000 members a year later. The West Don valley gives the area G. Ross Lord Park and the Forest Valley Outdoor Education Centre, which began on a 1956 ski-hill site. North York became part of the amalgamated City of Toronto in 1998.
The Bathurst Manor tee is for the neighbours of the plateau between Sheppard and Finch, from Wilmington Avenue to the Don valley trails.
