Bayview Village is one of North York's defining postwar communities. North York was formed in 1922 from the rural part of York Township, and after the Second World War a housing shortage turned its farmland into suburbs. Bayview Village was planned in 1954 by a group of developers led by Farlinger Development Ltd., with town planner Dr. E. G. Faludi setting its guiding principle: "We will fit the community into the landscape and not the landscape into the community." Most of its homes went up between 1954 and 1964, and residents founded the Bayview Village Association in 1956.

That principle still shows on the ground: nearly a quarter of Bayview Village is green space, shaped by the East Don Valley Parklands that run along its edge. The Bayview Village Shopping Centre opened in 1963 at Bayview and Sheppard avenues, and Bayview station followed in 2002 as part of Line 4 Sheppard. North York itself became part of the amalgamated City of Toronto in 1998.
