Neighborhood History

Bedford Park is a North Toronto neighbourhood that began as a rural hamlet on Yonge Street, a stopover for farmers heading to Toronto's markets. It takes its name from the Bedford Park Hotel, which Charles McBride opened in 1873 at Yonge and Fairlawn. By 1890 it was part of the new Town of North Toronto alongside Davisville and Eglinton, just as the Metropolitan Street Railway arrived; the town's population grew from 1,852 to 5,362 in a single decade, and it was annexed into the City of Toronto in 1912.

Most of Bedford Park's detached and semi-detached homes went up between 1890 and 1940, and a run of local schools followed between 1911 and 1927, among them Bedford Park Public School. The Yonge Street strip that once served passing farmers is still the neighbourhood's commercial spine, and the corner of Yonge and Fairlawn still marks where the name began.
