Neighborhood History
Belmont Cragin's name blends two distinct histories: Belmont Avenue, its southern boundary, and Cragin, honoring the Cragin Brothers & Company tin and sheet-iron plant that settled near the corner once nicknamed Whiskey Point after an 1835 saloon run by early settler George Merrill. The Cragin plant's arrival in the 1880s, followed by rail service from the Belt Railway Company in 1883, drew the German, Polish, and Italian factory workers who built the neighborhood's enduring bungalow belt.
Riis Park, designed by noted park architect Jan Jenssen, has anchored community recreation since the 1920s, while the Chicago Public Library's Portage-Cragin Branch has served neighborhood readers since first opening in a storefront in 1927.
From a saloon at Whiskey Point to a lasting bungalow-belt community built by generations of factory workers, Belmont Cragin's industrial roots are exactly the kind of hometown pride MY-NHD's apparel was made to carry.

Belmont Cragin combines Belmont Avenue with the name of the Cragin Brothers tin and sheet-iron plant, which arrived in the 1880s. Rail service from 1883 brought German, Polish and Italian workers to its factories, and they built the bungalow belt that still defines it.
