Neighborhood History

Ben Hill takes its name from Benjamin Harvey Hill (1823–1882), a prominent Georgia attorney, Confederate senator, and later U.S. Senator whose oratory made him one of the most recognizable political figures in post-Civil War Georgia. The area was first settled in the 1820s under the name Mount Gilead Cross Roads, and by the late nineteenth century the community had adopted the senator's name as development expanded across Southwest Atlanta's Fulton County plains.

The neighborhood anchors its civic identity around two enduring landmarks: Greenbriar Mall, one of Southwest Atlanta's principal retail and community gathering centers, and Ben Hill Park, a 13.66-acre city park whose recreation center was later renamed the William Walker Recreation Center in honor of its longtime director. Ben Hill United Methodist Church, established in its present location in 1926, grew from a congregation of 400 members in 1974 to over 4,000 by 1986, reflecting the neighborhood's deep roots as a majority African American community.

Ben Hill's long arc — from frontier crossroads to thriving Southwest Atlanta neighborhood — is the story MY-NHD apparel is built to honor. Wear the name that carries two centuries of Georgia history.
