Neighborhood History
Beverly developed atop a glacial ridge on Chicago's far South Side and emerged from the former Washington Heights area during the late nineteenth century. Historical records indicate the name Beverly or Beverly Hills appeared in railroad and civic usage during the 1890s. Railroad access and suburban-style residential development were the principal forces behind its growth.
Permanent landmarks include the Givins Castle and the Longwood Drive Historic District. These features reflect Beverly's distinctive architectural character and its development as a residential community noted for substantial homes and landscaped streets along one of Chicago's highest natural elevations.
Beverly's history combines transportation, architecture, and neighborhood planning on one of Chicago's most distinctive ridgelines. MY-NHD apparel recognizes that heritage through a connection to a community whose physical landscape and historic streets remain unlike anywhere else in the city.
