Neighborhood History

Birch Cliff is a Scarborough neighbourhood along Kingston Road, west of Birchmount Road, in the southwest corner of the former township. It takes its name from Birch Cliff, the cottage John Stark built on the Scarborough Bluffs and named for the birch trees on his property; when a post office opened in A.H. Mitchell's store in May 1908, the community adopted the name. The area stayed rural until the radial streetcar line from Toronto, extended to West Hill in 1906, made it possible to live in the township and work in the city.

Subdivisions such as Kingsbury Park (1910) and Kalmar Heights (1912) followed, and the population grew from about 200 in 1908 to 3,600 by the late 1920s. School Section No. 15 built the area's first school in 1915, and from 1922 Scarborough's township council met in Birch Cliff for 25 years. Rosetta McClain Gardens is among the neighbourhood's parks on the bluffs. Scarborough became part of the amalgamated City of Toronto in 1998.

The Birch Cliff tee is for the neighbours on the Bluffs who share the name of John Stark's cottage.
