Blossom Valley sits on land with deep agricultural roots in the Santa Clara Valley. The broader area was originally part of the Rancho Santa Teresa, granted to José Joaquín Bernal in 1834 under Mexican land tenure — one of the large ranchos established across the valley during the Spanish and Mexican periods. The Bernal family used the land for cattle ranching before it was gradually subdivided and converted to the orchards of apricots, prunes, and other fruit crops that earned the Santa Clara Valley its nickname as the Valley of Heart's Delight. The neighborhood takes its name directly from those blossoming orchards that covered the landscape through the first half of the twentieth century.

Residential development arrived in the 1960s and 1970s as San José expanded aggressively southward, replacing the last orchards with the ranch-style and split-level homes that characterize the neighborhood today. The nearby Bernal-Gulnac-Joice Ranch historic site preserves remnants of the original Bernal land grant era as a living museum. Westfield Oakridge Mall, which opened in the 1970s, became the commercial anchor for Blossom Valley and the surrounding South San José communities.
