Bowmanville takes its name from Jesse Bowman, an innkeeper who settled the area in 1850 and, according to Alfred Theodore Andreas's 1884 History of Cook County, sold parcels of land he did not legally own before disappearing — leaving unwitting buyers to purchase their plots a second time. The small village that grew up near Foster and present-day Ravenswood was annexed into Chicago's Jefferson Township, developing alongside the massive Budlong Pickle Farm, a 700-acre operation that made Chicago's north side the pickle capital of the country by 1900.

Rosehill Cemetery, opened in 1859 on land once known as Roe's Hill after early settler Hiram Roe, still borders the neighborhood, while Swedish Covenant Hospital now stands near the site of a documented Native American burial ground uncovered during an 1904 gravel excavation.
