Neighborhood History

Bracondale Hill is a Toronto neighbourhood on the Davenport escarpment, named for the Georgian-style estate that British-born barrister Robert John Turner built on the ridge, moving his family there in 1847. In the mid-1800s only the wealthy built on this hill — the Baldwin family were neighbours — and around 1900 Frank Turner sold roughly 200 lots from the Bracondale Estate, seeding streets that still carry family names: Frank, Turner, Conrad, Rains and Ashworth.

The city expropriated the estate grounds for parkland in 1930, creating today's Hillcrest Park, and the mansion itself came down in 1937. The neighbourhood runs from Davenport Road up to St. Clair Avenue West, its main commercial strip, and borders Wychwood Park, designated a Heritage Conservation District in 1985.
