Neighborhood History

Brainerd takes its name from Mr. Brainerd, one of five founders of the Rock Island Railroad honored on street signs in neighboring Beverly — a name that outlived the original Brainerd Street (renamed 91st Street after Chicago's 1890 annexation) and passed instead to this neighborhood and its park. Settled in 1880 northwest of Washington Heights, Brainerd grew slowly at first for lack of transportation, then surged once streetcars reached the area in 1912, fueling a bungalow-building boom that peaked in 1927.

That building boom is still visible today. The Brainerd Bungalow Historic District, added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2016, preserves 527 Chicago bungalows raised between 1915 and 1931. A few blocks over, Brainerd Park has anchored community life since 1941, its fieldhouse hosting neighborhood gatherings across three generations.
