Brickyard takes its name plainly from the industry that built it: through the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the neighborhood's clay-rich soil fed brickworks including the Western Brick and Tile Company and the long-running Carey Brickyard, supplying material used across Chicago. Rail access, extended into the area by the Belt Railway Company in 1883, carried both workers and product, tying Brickyard's fortunes to the rest of industrial Belmont Cragin from its earliest years.

When the Carey family closed their brickworks in 1960, the excavated clay pit briefly became Thunder Mountain, a one-season ski hill built on its 285-foot drop, before the site was redeveloped as the Brickyard Shopping Center in 1977. The name held even after a 2003 rebuild replaced the enclosed mall with big-box retail, and it remains visible today alongside the Grand-Cicero Metra station that still serves the corridor.
