Bridgeport derives its name from a bridge crossing the South Branch of the Chicago River near the route of the Illinois and Michigan Canal. The name was in use by 1836 as workers and settlers established a community adjacent to canal construction. Canal building, river transportation, and quarrying served as the primary forces behind the neighborhood's early development.

Permanent landmarks include the Bridgeport Historic District and Palmisano Park. The historic district preserves residential and commercial structures associated with the neighborhood's nineteenth- and early twentieth-century growth, while Palmisano Park occupies the site of a former limestone quarry that supplied building materials during Chicago's expansion.
