Neighborhood History

Broadway Auto Row is one of Oakland's most distinctive historic commercial districts — a stretch of Broadway between Grand Avenue and 27th Street that became the East Bay's premier automobile sales corridor from circa 1912, when the automobile boom transformed the nation's commercial streets and Oakland's Broadway emerged as the regional destination for car dealerships, showrooms, and automotive services. The district's grand automotive architecture — Beaux-Arts and Art Deco showroom buildings designed to showcase the glamour of the early automobile era — represents one of the most intact collections of early 20th-century automotive commercial architecture in California, documented by the Oakland Heritage Alliance and the City of Oakland's Historic Preservation Program. The Paramount Theatre on Broadway — the 1931 Art Deco masterpiece designed by Timothy Pflueger and listed on the National Register of Historic Places — sits at the southern edge of the corridor, anchoring Broadway Auto Row's connection to Oakland's Uptown arts and entertainment district. Kaiser Permanente's Oakland Medical Center on Broadway provides the district's most significant contemporary institutional presence. That layered commercial heritage — the corridor where Oakland embraced the automobile age — is the spirit behind the MY-NHD Broadway Auto Row collection.
