Bronzeville derives its name from a term adopted during the early twentieth century to celebrate the identity of Chicago's growing African American community. The neighborhood emerged as a major center of Black life during the Great Migration, beginning around 1916, when thousands of Black Americans moved north seeking economic opportunity and greater freedom. Migration, rail access, and Black entrepreneurship were the primary forces behind its development.

Permanent landmarks include the Monument to the Great Northern Migration and the historic Chicago Bee Building. These physical reminders reflect Bronzeville's role as the center of Chicago's Black Metropolis, a nationally significant hub of journalism, business, music, and civic leadership.
