Bucktown takes its name from the goats Polish immigrants once kept on this stretch of prairie north of Wicker Park — in Polish, Kozie Prery, or "goat prairie," with buck being the English word for a male goat. Polish settlement began here in the 1830s, and by the 1890s the neighborhood was woven into Chicago's Polish Downtown, a Milwaukee Avenue corridor that swelled further once the Logan Square branch of the Metropolitan elevated line reached the area.

Traces of that era remain standing. St. Mary of the Angels, one of the city's grand Polish Cathedral-style churches, was built in 1899. Horween Leather Company has tanned hides on North Elston Avenue since 1920, one of the last working tanneries in an American city. Holstein Park, named for the town absorbed into Chicago in 1863, still anchors community life with its annual arts fest.
