Budlong Woods takes its name directly from Lyman and Joseph Budlong, brothers from an old Rhode Island farming family who arrived in 1857 and built a 700-acre pickle farm and nursery centered near what's now Foster and California Avenues. By the 1880s the operation, known as the "village of glass" for its many greenhouses, was shipping pickles and flowers nationwide and running its own "pickle train" to ferry workers in from the city. When the farm closed in the 1920s, its fields were subdivided into the residential neighborhood that still carries the Budlong name.

Traces of that agricultural past linger in the neighborhood's civic geography. Legion Park, established along the North Shore Channel in 1930 to honor World War I veterans, still anchors community recreation on the neighborhood's western edge. Just blocks from the old farm's center, the Budlong Woods branch of the Chicago Public Library, opened in 2003, carries the family name into its second century.
