Buena Vista takes its name from the Spanish phrase for "good view" — a name attached by Spanish travelers who regularly passed this prominent hilltop on the route between Mission Dolores and the Presidio of San Francisco. The neighborhood surrounds Buena Vista Park, established in 1867 as Hill Park by San Francisco's Committee on Outside Lands and formally dedicated as Buena Vista Park in 1894 — the oldest official park in the city, covering 38 acres and rising to 575 feet above the surrounding streets. Superintendent John McLaren oversaw the park's forestation in the 1890s, planting the eucalyptus, cypress, and pine that now densely cover its slopes.

The residential neighborhood developed around the park through the Park Hill Homestead Association, formed in 1869, with lots offered for sale from 1884 onward. Victorian and Edwardian homes built across the late 19th and early 20th centuries still line the streets surrounding the park, many of them surviving the 1906 earthquake — from which residents gathered on Buena Vista's summit for five days to watch the fires burning across the city below. One of the park's most singular landmarks endures in its drainage gutters: Victorian-era headstones repurposed from San Francisco's relocated cemeteries, embedded as building material in the paths that wind up the hill.
