Bushrod takes its name from Dr. Bushrod Washington James, a Philadelphia physician and philanthropist who left property in his will for the development of a public park in this stretch of North Oakland, with the donation dating to 1903. The neighborhood grew up in the years that followed as a residential district of bungalow and Craftsman-style homes, built for the middle-class families arriving with Oakland's early 20th-century northward expansion.

At the neighborhood's center sits Bushrod Park, a community green space on Shattuck Avenue that has long served as North Oakland's gathering point, with playing fields, a community garden, and recreation facilities.
