Neighborhood History

Cabrini-Green takes its name from the two public housing developments that once stood here: the Frances Cabrini Homes, completed in 1942 and named for Saint Frances Xavier Cabrini, an Italian-American nun canonized for her work among the poor, and the William Green Homes, added in 1962 and named for the longtime president of the American Federation of Labor. The Cabrini Homes were built to house World War II veterans and war-industry workers on Chicago's Near North Side, part of a broader wave of public housing built under the U.S. Housing Act.

The high-rise towers that followed were demolished between 1995 and 2011, but the original two-story Frances Cabrini Rowhouses still stand today, partially renovated. Seward Park and Durso Park remain neighborhood gathering places, and Jenner Academy of the Arts continues to serve the community's youngest residents as it has for generations.
