Calumet Heights takes its name from the nearby Calumet River and the ridge of Niagara limestone — Stony Island Ridge — that rises through the neighborhood, a formation that was once an actual island when glacial Lake Chicago covered the area thousands of years ago. The swampy land stayed largely unsettled until 1881, when a railroad was built along its western edge; developer Samuel E. Gross platted the Calumet Heights subdivision in 1887, and the area was annexed into Chicago via Hyde Park Township in 1889.

That ridge still shapes the neighborhood today. Jesse Owens Park, with its LEED-certified fieldhouse, sits along the high ground, and the Bronzeville Children's Museum — the only children's museum in the country devoted to African American history — has called Calumet Heights home since the early 2000s. Advocate Trinity Hospital, successor to the South Chicago Community Hospital that drew generations of doctors to the neighborhood's Pill Hill section, still anchors its center.
