Cambrian Park takes its name from Cambria, the Latin name for Wales, applied to the area's first school in the 1870s by David Lewis, a Welsh-born ranch hand on the Jeremiah D. Casey Ranch. The name passed from the schoolhouse to the surrounding school district and, through regular use in the San José Mercury and San José News, to the broader community — a rare case of a Welsh immigrant permanently shaping the place-name landscape of the Santa Clara Valley.

Through the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries the Cambrian area was actively farmed, with settlers cultivating wheat, barley, prunes, and apricots. The We and Our Neighbors Clubhouse, established in 1892 to serve the area's farm families, built a Craftsman-style meeting hall in 1910 that is now both a San José Historic Landmark and a property on the National Register of Historic Places. Cambrian Park Plaza, the neighborhood's first shopping center, opened in 1953 as the commercial hub of a community rapidly converting from farmland to postwar tract housing. Its iconic carousel sign, erected at the plaza entrance in 1953, was designated a San José Historic Landmark in 2016.
