Neighborhood History

Carleton Village is a west-end Toronto neighbourhood descended from two nineteenth-century settlements. Carlton grew in the late 1840s around William Bull's carriage and wagon shop and was named for Governor Guy Carleton; Davenport was a smaller settlement to the south along Davenport Road. Carlton had its own railway station by 1857 and a post office by 1858, and by 1865 was home to about 150 residents.

In 1889 Carlton and Davenport joined the Village of West Toronto Junction, and the combined town was annexed into the City of Toronto in 1909 — the same year Carlton Avenue was renamed Connolly Street. The neighbourhood centres on Davenport Road between the rail corridors, around Wadsworth Park, named for Alderman William J. Wadsworth. The nearby CPR West Toronto station, rebuilt in 1911 at Old Weston Road and Dupont Street, was demolished in 1982.
