Cathedral Hill takes its name from the concentration of prominent religious institutions that have defined this compact Western Addition neighborhood since the late 19th century. Bounded by Post Street, Van Ness Avenue, Eddy Street, and Laguna Street, the neighborhood is home to St. Mark's Lutheran Church, the First Unitarian Church of San Francisco, Hamilton Baptist Church, and Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory school — a density of denominational presence that shaped both its name and its civic identity across more than a century of San Francisco's growth and rebuilding.

The neighborhood's defining landmark is the Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Assumption, the principal seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of San Francisco, consecrated on May 5, 1971. Designed by architect Pietro Belluschi — then dean of MIT's School of Architecture — and structural engineer Pier Luigi Nervi, the cathedral's hyperbolic paraboloid roof rises 190 feet above the hill, its eight concrete shell segments converging in a cross at the summit. Nervi described it as "the first cathedral truly of our time and in harmony with the liturgical reforms of the Council" — a building born directly from the Second Vatican Council's call for liturgical spaces that united congregation and altar without obstruction. The cathedral replaced a predecessor destroyed by fire in 1962, and was constructed on land cleared by the San Francisco Redevelopment Agency in the Western Addition.
