Central Station takes its name directly from the Illinois Central Railroad terminal that once stood at its northwest corner, at Roosevelt Road and Michigan Avenue. Built in 1893 to a Romanesque Revival design by architect Bradford L. Gilbert to handle crowds arriving for the World's Columbian Exposition, the station anchored one of Chicago's six great downtown rail terminals and, for decades, served as a key point of entry for Black Americans arriving during the Great Migration. Passenger service ended in 1972 when Amtrak consolidated downtown routes at Union Station, and the terminal building itself was demolished in 1974.

The neighborhood built on that site began development in 1990, on the 80 acres of former rail yards and air rights east of Michigan Avenue. The Museum Campus/11th Street Metra station, successor to the terminal's old suburban platforms, still carries Metra Electric and South Shore Line riders through the same ground. Museum Park's cluster of residential towers, built across the redeveloped rail yards, now looks out over Grant Park's southern edge, just steps from where the old clock tower once stood.
