Neighborhood History

Chabot Park is an Oakland hills neighborhood developed circa 1922 and named for Anthony Chabot — the French-Canadian entrepreneur and philanthropist who built the East Bay's first municipal water system in the 1870s, constructing the reservoirs and pipelines that supplied Oakland's growing population and whose legacy is preserved in the Chabot Regional Park bearing his name. The neighborhood occupies the upper eastern slopes below Skyline Boulevard, its residential streets developed as hillside housing extended Oakland's residential grid into the terrain above the Dimond and Laurel districts. Chabot Regional Park — managed by the East Bay Regional Parks District and encompassing over 5,000 acres of oak woodland, chaparral, and trail corridors above the neighborhood — provides the community's most significant natural and recreational anchor, its Anthony Chabot Golf Course on Redwood Road one of the most popular public golf courses in the East Bay. Redwood Regional Park lies adjacent to the east, extending the natural open space corridor available to Chabot Park residents.
