China Basin takes its name from the inlet where Mission Creek empties into San Francisco Bay — an anchorage named in the 1860s when the city's rapidly expanding trade with the Far East gave rise to a cluster of Pacific-facing waterfront names: China Basin, India Basin, and the Oriental Warehouse, each one a marker of San Francisco's emergence as the United States' primary gateway to Asia. The name appeared on 1869 harbor maps and has persisted ever since, tracing the water's edge from Channel Street south to Mission Rock.

The neighborhood was built on landfill progressively reclaimed between roughly 1860 and 1910, transforming a tidal marsh and shallow bay into one of San Francisco's most productive industrial waterfronts. The Southern Pacific Railroad dominated the area for decades, operating an extensive railyard on land that would later become the Mission Bay district, with the China Basin Wharfside Building constructed by Southern Pacific in 1922 surviving as one of the neighborhood's most visible landmarks. The Del Monte Cannery's China Basin building, built in 1925, anchored the northern edge of Mission Bay through the cannery era. The area remained an industrial and rail freight corridor through much of the 20th century, until Oracle Park — home of the San Francisco Giants, opened in 2000 — catalyzed the neighborhood's transformation into one of the city's most dynamic mixed-use waterfronts.
