Chrysler Village was built in 1942 and 1943 as one of America's few completed wartime worker-housing projects, developed by Joseph E. Merrion and F.J. Walsh with FHA-insured loans to house the roughly 30,000 workers assembling B-29 Superfortress bomber engines at the nearby Dodge-Chrysler defense plant. Its 64 acres of curvilinear streets, laid out in deliberate contrast to Chicago's rigid street grid, held 700 brick single-family homes, duplexes, and row houses — a planned community built directly into the larger Clearing neighborhood on Chicago's Southwest Side.

That wartime plan survives largely intact. The Chrysler Village Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2014, recognized as an important link between earlier planned communities like Pullman and the postwar suburbs it helped inspire. Lawler Park still sits at the development's center, and the old Dodge-Chrysler plant itself went on to build B-52 engines as Ford's Aircraft Engine Division before its site became Ford City.
