Clarendon Heights takes its name from Clarendon Avenue, which winds through this hillside neighborhood tucked between Twin Peaks and Mount Sutro in central San Francisco. The neighborhood's character was shaped decisively by Adolph Sutro, the Prussian-born engineer and 24th mayor of San Francisco, who in the 1880s owned nearly a tenth of the city's total acreage and used annual Arbor Day celebrations to plant thousands of eucalyptus trees on the rocky coastal slopes above the neighborhood. Mount Sutro — renamed from Mount Parnassus in his honor — rises directly above Clarendon Heights, its dense forest providing a natural buffer from the city below.

Tank Hill, the neighborhood's most recognizable open space, takes its name from the Clarendon Heights Water Tank that once sat at its summit, pumping water from Laguna Honda. The water tank was removed in 1957, and the city eventually acquired the hill through its Open Space Fund in the 1970s. Sutro Tower, the iconic three-pronged broadcast lattice completed in 1973, rises from the ridge between Twin Peaks and Mount Sutro directly above the neighborhood and has become one of San Francisco's most recognizable skyline landmarks.
