Neighborhood History

Clawson, a West Oakland neighborhood at the gateway to Emeryville and South Berkeley beneath the MacArthur Maze, takes its name from Clawson School, itself named for local educator William Clawson.

The school's 1915 Neo-Classical building on Peralta Street was designed by architect John J. Donovan — who also designed Oakland's Kaiser Center for the Arts and City Hall — and served the community until its 1970s closure, later becoming residential condominiums. Nearby, St. Paul's English Evangelical Lutheran Church has long stood as one of the neighborhood's enduring civic landmarks.

A neighborhood shaped by its schoolhouse and steadied by one of its churches is the kind of grounded, local history MY-NHD's Clawson collection is designed to carry forward.
