Clearing takes its name from the freight yards that once cleared, or delivered, farm goods through the area's railroads and airport. Former Chicago mayor "Long John" Wentworth bought up much of the land here starting in the 1850s, assembling a 4,700-acre "Summit Farm," and by the 1870s an early subdivision known as the "Lost Village" had appeared on maps near 63rd and Narragansett. The town of Clearing incorporated within Stickney Township in 1912 and joined Chicago just three years later.

Rail and industry defined what came next. After railroad executive A.B. Stickney's failed switching-yard scheme, businessman Henry H. Porter's Chicago Clearing and Transfer Company drew in the Argo Corn Products plant in 1907, launching the Clearing Industrial District — one of the first of its kind anywhere. Two decades later, in 1927, the city dedicated Chicago Municipal Airport, later renamed Midway, on Clearing's southern edge. Lawler Park, opened in 1947, and Hale Park still anchor the neighborhood's residential streets today.
