Neighborhood History
Cliffcrest is a Scarborough neighbourhood on the shore of Lake Ontario, between Midland Avenue and Bellamy Road south of the Canadian National Railway line. Its name refers to the Scarborough Bluffs, the sandy cliffs along the lake's edge that mark its southern boundary. Cliffcrest's high school began on September 6, 1922, when Scarborough High School started classes; its building rose on land bought from the farms of the Pherrill family. It became Scarborough Collegiate Institute in 1930 and was renamed R. H. King Collegiate Institute in 1954 after Reginald Harold King, its first principal for 32 years; it has been R. H. King Academy since 1989.
The Cliffcrest branch of the Toronto Public Library opened on Kingston Road on October 2, 1972, and in 2008 moved within Cliffcrest Plaza to 3017 Kingston Road. At the foot of the bluffs, Bluffer's Park has a beach and a yacht club, and Cudia Park and McCowan District Park are among the neighbourhood's other parks. Scarborough became part of the amalgamated City of Toronto in 1998.
The Cliffcrest tee is for the neighbours along the crest of the Scarborough Bluffs.
