Neighborhood History
Cliffside is a Scarborough neighbourhood along the Scarborough Bluffs, between Kennedy Road and Brimley Road south of St. Clair Avenue East. It takes its name from the Cliffside Golf Course, which George McCordick opened in 1931 south of Kingston Road and west of Midland Avenue, with a converted farmhouse as its clubhouse and the bluffs as its southern edge. The course closed in 1950 as new housing and commercial development spread along Kingston Road.
Most of the neighbourhood was built in the early 1950s, during the post-war building boom, with some older homes left from the earlier growth of Birch Cliff to the west. A mural by Dan Sawatzky at 2435 Kingston Road, completed in July 1991, recalls the golf course with a golfer in 1920s dress beside a vintage car. Kingston Road, the old stagecoach route east from Toronto, remains the neighbourhood's main street. Scarborough became part of the amalgamated City of Toronto in 1998.
The Cliffside tee is for the neighbours along the bluffs who live on the old fairways.
