Neighborhood History

Cole Valley takes its name from Cole Street, the neighborhood's main commercial artery, which cuts through what was once a pastoral hollow in San Francisco's "Outside Lands" — the undeveloped western territories beyond the original city grid. Photographs from circa 1892 show cows grazing in the valley with Mount Sutro rising in the background. Through the early 1920s, residents lobbied for direct streetcar service to the area. Work began on the Duboce Tunnel route in 1925, and the Sunset Tunnel — at the intersection of Carl and Cole Streets — opened in 1928. Cole Valley grew up directly around that tunnel entrance, which remains the heart of its compact three-block commercial district. The N Judah light rail line still stops at Carl and Cole today, following the same corridor established nearly a century ago.

The neighborhood's Victorian and Edwardian homes have survived largely intact, a product of the area's late development and quiet pace. Cole Valley is among the smallest neighborhoods in San Francisco by area, bordered by Golden Gate Park to the north, Haight-Ashbury to the northeast, Tank Hill to the south, and Sutro Forest to the west. It is a neighborhood defined as much by what surrounds it as by what lies within it.

The tight-knit character of Cole Valley — compact streets, enduring architecture, and transit roots — is exactly what MY-NHD apparel is built to celebrate.
