The Coliseum neighborhood in East Oakland takes its name from the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum, a major sports and entertainment complex whose construction defined the character of this flatlands district. In 1960, a non-profit corporation led by developer Robert T. Nahas selected a site near the Nimitz Freeway (Interstate 880) for the complex, with the Port of Oakland donating approximately 105 acres of land to make the project possible. Construction began in 1962, and the stadium opened on September 18, 1966, anchoring a residential and industrial district that grew around it in the postwar decades.

The neighborhood is bounded by the Coliseum BART station, which opened in September 1972 as part of BART's inaugural revenue service segment and serves as one of East Oakland's primary transit interchanges alongside Fruitvale station. The station connects the district to regional rail, AC Transit bus routes, and the Oakland Airport Connector, making Coliseum one of the most transit-accessible neighborhoods in the East Bay. The stadium complex itself — home to the Oakland Raiders and Oakland Athletics across multiple decades — gave residents a civic gathering place that shaped the neighborhood's working-class identity.
