Corona Heights takes its name from the park that crowns it — a name officially assigned in 1941 when the City of San Francisco purchased the 16-acre Rocky Hill site for $27,333 at the urging of Josephine Randall, Superintendent of Recreation for the San Francisco Recreation & Parks Department. Before it became a park, the hill was known as Rock Hill, and its landscape bore the marks of active industry: in 1899 the Gray Brothers — George and Harry — established a rock quarry and brick factory on the site, extracting the distinctive Franciscan chert bedrock and producing tens of thousands of bricks for San Francisco's construction boom. The quarry's excavations carved roads into the hillside that determined the street grid of the neighborhood itself, giving Corona Heights its steep, distinctive topography.

The Randall Museum, established at the park's lower southwest edge in 1951, fulfilled Josephine Randall's vision of giving city children "a day in the country." Corona Heights Park today offers some of San Francisco's most unobstructed panoramic views, stretching from downtown to Twin Peaks. The vivid red chert rock at the summit — the geological foundation of the neighborhood's identity — is visible from across the city.
