Neighborhood History
Cottage Grove Heights is one of the neighborhoods of Chicago’s Pullman community area on the Far South Side, and it takes its name from Cottage Grove Avenue. In the 1880s that avenue formed the western boundary of the model company town George Pullman built for the workers of his railcar company, which ran from 103rd to 115th Street. After World War II the area’s residential population kept growing, and in 1947 Gately Park opened on former Pullman Company land along Cottage Grove Avenue to serve it.
Today Cottage Grove Heights is a predominantly African American community, with nearly all of its roughly 3,100 residents identifying as Black. Nearby, the Pullman Historic District preserves the company town’s landmarks, including the Hotel Florence, opened in 1881 and named for George Pullman’s daughter, and the Greenstone Church. Both are part of Pullman National Historical Park, first protected as a national monument in 2015.
MY-NHD’s Cottage Grove Heights collection carries the name of a South Side neighborhood that grew up beside the historic town of Pullman.
