Cottage Grove Heights takes its name from Cottage Grove Avenue, the street that has marked the western edge of the Pullman community area since George Pullman first laid out his company town here in the 1880s. Developed later as one of Pullman's residential sections, the neighborhood grew over the course of the 20th century into a close-knit, predominantly African American community, its local news covered for decades by its own paper, the Grove Heights News, part of the Calumet region's community press.

The neighborhood sits alongside the historic Pullman Historic District, home to the Hotel Florence and Greenstone Church, all part of the Pullman National Historical Park just blocks from Cottage Grove Heights' front doors. Bounded by Cottage Grove and Stony Island Avenues, the community remains overwhelmingly African American today, a continuity documented across decades of Chicago's own community-area census records.
